LAS VEGAS - SEPTEMBER 30: A 66-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton dubbed "Samson" is displayed at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino September 30, 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The 40-foot-long female dinosaur fossil, excavated in South Dakota in 1992, contains about 170 bones and is said to be the third most complete T. rex skeleton ever unearthed. The skull currently mounted on the display is a cast replica of the 450-pound original. Thomas Lindgren, co-consulting department director of Natural History at auctioneers Bonhams & Butterfields, said the original is being displayed separately for safety reasons and as it is one of the most intact in existence makes it completely available for scientific research. Bonhams & Butterfields is hoping Samson will fetch more than USD 6 million when it is auctioned off as the centerpiece of a lot of 50 fossils on October 3 at the Venetian as part of their Natural History auction. 402200 09: Two visitors stop to look at Sue- the largest, most complete, and best preserved Tyrannosaurus Rex fossil yet discovered - outside the "Tiniest Giants: Discovering Dinosaur Eggs" exhibit March 12, 2002 at Chicagos Field Museum. The exhibit comes from the 1997 discovery in southern Argentina of the largest nesting site of dinosaur eggs ever found. More than a mile square, the site held tens of thousands of eggs, some containing fossilized embryos so well preserved the scientists could see patterns of reptilian scales in their skin. "Tiniest Giants: Discovering Dinosaur Eggs" was developed by the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County and the Carmen Funes Museum of Argentina. The exhibit is open at the Field Museum through September 2, 2002. (Photo by Tim Boyle/Getty Images) ( 40220009dino_20020318_01907.jpg )
