Mr. Bon Jovi was unaware what the injury was at the time, but finished the show and would have surgery to remove the meniscus just over two weeks later. (Photo credit: David Bergman / Bon Jovi) "Jon Bon Jovi injured his knee during a 2011 show in Helsinki," remembers Bergman. "He had a major tear of his left meniscus and had trouble putting weight on it, but still powered through the rest of the show. Afterwards, he refused crutches and gingerly walked back to the dressing room. Management sent everyone else back to the hotel, except for Jon’s chiropractor / trainer Dean Grillo and me. I was obviously concerned because we didn’t know how bad the injury was at the time. Of course, Jon is a friend and I wanted him to be OK, but I also knew that an injury to one of the biggest rock stars in the world might have historical importance. I went into 'photojournalist' mode and simply documented everything that was happening. It was eerily quiet in the room as Dean worked on Jon, who was in obvious pain. "As a creative person, he’s always been interested in photography and, after watching me work day after day photographing him, he starting asking questions. I occasionally teach individual and group photo workshops, but he’s clearly my highest profile photo student! During the tour on non-show days, we would walk around parks in the neighborhood and I’d teach him about apertures and shutter speeds. He’s got a great eye, but didn’t know the technical aspects of making an image. I took this photo of him in lower Manhattan, New York City, as he adjusted the settings on his camera. Inside WORK, there’s a special section featuring some of the images he’s taken on family vacations around the world and I’m quite proud of his work!
