On August 10, 1999, Los Angeles Police Officers lead children to safety after Buford O. Furrow, Jr. walked into the lobby of the North Valley Jewish Community Center in Granada Hills and opened fire with a semiautomatic weapon. The gunfire wounded five people: three children, a teenage counselor, and an office worker. After leaving the North Valley Jewish Community Center Furrow murdered US Postal Service carrier Joseph Ileto nearby. On January 24, 2001 Furrow pleaded guilty to avoid a possible death sentence, and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
